Cable Hat Knitting Pattern

Knit with one skein of a very soft merino wool, there is also a matching scarf and fingerless mittens pattern available.

Size:
One size fits most adults
Circumference=21"

Gauge:
18½ sts=4" in St st

Materials:
Size 9 US needles (5.5 mm) or size to obtain gauge
Kettle Dyed Pure Merino Wool by Malabrigo Yarn
One ball Color #28 Blue Surf
216 yards/100 grams
100% merino wool
Blunt large eye tapestry needle
Cable needle

Instructions
Pattern Stitches:
K1, P1 Ribbing
Row 1: *k1, p1; rep from *
Rep Row 1.

Criss Cross Cable With Twists
Rows 1 (RS), 5: p2, c4f, p4, c4f, p2
Rows 2, 4, 6, 11, 15, 19, 24: k2, p4, k4, p4, k2
Rows 3, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22: p2, k4, p4, k4, p2
Row 7: (t4b, t4f) twice
Rows 9, 13, 17, 21: k2, p4, c4f, p4, k2
Row 23: (t4f, t4b) twice
Rep Rows 1-24.

c4f=slip next 2 sts to cn and hold in front, k2 from left needle, k2 from cn
t4b=slip next 2 sts to cn and hold in back, k2 from left needle, p2 from cn
t4f=slip next 2 sts to cn and hold in front, p2 from left needle, k2 from cn

Cable Hat Knitting Pattern

Ribbing
CO 98 sts.
Work K1, P1 ribbing 5". BO
Cable
CO 18 sts.
Working a selvedge st on each side in St st, work Criss Cross Cable With Twists over center 16 sts 21". BO.
Seam long end of cable to BO edge of ribbing.
Body Of Hat
Pick up 98 sts evenly along free long edge of cable.
Work in St st until 10" from beg of hat.
Decrease Crown
Row 1: k1, *k6, k2tog; rep from *, end k1-86 sts
Rows 2 and all WS rows: Purl
Row 3: k1, *k5, k2tog; rep from *, end k1-74 sts
Row 5: k1, *k4, k2tog; rep from *, end k1-62 sts
Row 7: k1, *k3, k2tog; rep from *, end k1-50 sts
Row 9: k1, *k2, k2tog; rep from *, end k1-38 sts
Row 11: k1, *k1, k2tog; rep from *, end k1-26 sts
Row 13: k1, *k2tog; rep from *, end k1-14 sts
Row 15: k1, *k2tog; rep from *, end k1-8 sts

Finishing
Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. With tapestry needle, thread tail through remaining sts and pull tightly to close top of hat.
Using tail, sew side seam. Reverse the side you are sewing the seam on half way down the ribbing.
Weave in ends on WS.
