Designed by Barbara Breiter

Child's Pullover

Knit by Nancy Swinburnson. Shown in size 4 at a gauge of 4.5st/inch.

This pattern is for a crew neck pullover sweater with set in sleeves.

Size:
Standard 6 year old
Gauge:
5 st=1 inch
Finished Measurements:
Chest: 26 inches
Sleeve Length: 11.5 inches
Yarn:
Approximately 7.2 ounces in yarn that meets gauge. Please note that some yarns are heavier than others (cotton weighs more than wool for example and you will need more yarn).
Needles:
As appropriate to meet gauge. Use needles one or two times smaller for ribbing than for the rest of the sweater.

Instructions:

Back:
Cast on 66 sts on smaller needles. Work in K1P1 ribbing for 2 ins. Inc 2 sts evenly over last row (68 st).
Change to larger needles. Work even until piece measures 7 ins, excluding ribbing.
Armhole: Bind off 3 sts at beginning of next 2 rows. Dec 1 st each end every other row 2 times (58 st). Work even until armhole measures 5.5 ins.
Shoulder shaping: Bind off 7 sts at beginning of next 2 rows. Bind off 8 sts at beginning of next 2 rows.
Place rem sts on holder.

Front:
Same as for back until armhole measures 3.25 ins with 58 sts remaining.
Shape neck: Work both sides at the same time. Work 22 sts. Slip the next 14 sts to a holder. With a second ball of yarn, work remaining 22 sts. Dec 1 st at neck edge every row 7 times, until 15 sts remain.
Work even until armhole measures 5.5 ins.
Shoulder shaping: Bind off as for back.

Sleeves:
Cast on 33 sts on smaller needles. Work in K1P1 ribbing for 1 inch. Inc 5 sts evenly across the row to 38 sts total.
Change to larger needles. Work even until piece measures 1.5 ins, excluding ribbing. Inc 1 st at each end of next row, then every following 12th row 4 times to 48 sts.
Work even until sleeve measures 10.25 ins, excluding ribbing.
Shape cap: Bind off 3 sts at beg of next two rows. Dec 1 st at each end of every row 2 times, then dec 1 st at each end of every 2nd row 10 times, then dec 1 st at each end of every row 2 times. Bind off remaining 14 sts loosely.

Finishing:
Sew left shoulder seam.
With smaller needles and right side of work facing, pick up and knit 28 sts from back neck holder, 15 sts from left front neck edge, 14 sts from front neck holder, and 15 sts from right front neck edge. Total 72 sts.
Work 1 inch in K1P1 ribbing.
Bind off loosely in ribbing.
Sew side and sleeve seams.
Weave in all loose ends.
