Two Color Bulky Mittens For Children Knitting Pattern

Bulky Mittens For Children Knitting Pattern These mittens fit children about ages 8 to 10. You could omit the color pattern and knit them in one color instead.

Materials:
100 grams bulky weight wool (MC)
Small amount contrasting color yarn (CC)
Size 4 US (3.5 mm) double pointed needles - set of 4
stitch holder
tapestry needle

Gauge:
28 sts=4 inches in St st
Fabric will be very dense.

Instructions
Right Mitten
With MC, CO 34 sts. Join and mark beg of round.
Work 14 rounds in K1, P1 rib.

Thumb Increase
Next round: Knit
Next round: K20, M1, k1, M1, k to end of round
Next round: Knit
Next round: K20, M1, k3, M1, knit to end of round
Next round: Knit
Next round: K20, M1, k5, M1, knit to end of round - 40 sts

Palm
Knit 4 rounds.
Next round: K20, place next 7 sts on a stitch holder, CO 7 sts to replace sts on holder, knit to end of round.
Knit 3 rounds.
Next round: K2 with MC, k1 with CC, (k3MC, k1CC) to last st, k1MC.
Next round: (k1MC, k1CC) to end of round
Next round: (k1CC, k3MC) to end of round
Next round: (k1MC, k1CC) to end of round.
Next round: k2MC, k1CC, (k3MC, k1CC) to last st, k1MC.
Next round: (k1MC, k1CC) to end of round
Next round: (k1CC, k3MC) to end of round.
Break off contrast yarn.
K 8 rounds.

Decrease Top
Next round: K1, k2tog tbl (through back loop), k14, k2tog, k2, k2tog tbl, k14, k2tog, k1
Next round: Knit
Next round: k1, k2tog tbl, k12, k2tog, k2, k2tog tbl, k12, k2tog, Kk1
Next round: Knit

Continue to decrease in this manner until 12 sts remain. K one round. Divide sts evenly on two needles and graft top.

Thumb
Knit the 7 sts off stitch holder, then pick up 7 sts evenly around the hole for the thumb.
Divide on 3 needles and knit 14 rounds.
K2tog around.
Cut yarn, leaving along tail. Thread through tapetry neelde and draw yarn through rem 7 sts and pull up. Cut yarn leaving a tail 6 inches long. (You can use this to reinforce the thumb hole from the inside of the mitten.)

Left Mitten
Work the same as Right Mitten but begin the thumb increase after 13 stitches instead of 20.
