Toddler Vest Knitting Pattern

Knit by Carole Schmidt

Quick and easy vest knitting pattern for boys or girls.

Size:
Fits Ages 2 to 3
Finished Chest: 22" including button bands
Total length: 13"; 8" to armholes; 5" to shoulders.

Gauge:
10 sts=4"

Materials:
Size 15 US (10 mm) needles
Very bulky yarn or use multiple strands of one or more yarns combined to meet gauge
Use a different yarn (or combination of yarns) for trim if you wish

4 buttons

Instructions
CO 51 sts using the trim yarns (could be a combination of the sweater yarns with one different one added).

Work 5 rows of garter stitch, then switch to the yarns to be used for the whole vest.
Work in St st until piece measures 8".

Divide For Front And Back
Work over center 25 sts for the Back; place 13 sts on each side on holders for Fronts.
Cont in St st over these 25 sts.
Dec 1 st at each armhole edge twice.
Cont until piece measures 13".
Place sts on holder.

Place 13 sts from one Front on needle.
Working in St st, dec 1 st at armhole edge twice.
At same time, dec 1 st at neck edge every 3rd row 5 times - 6 sts. When Front measures same as Back, work 3 needle bind off over shoulders of Front and Back.
Repeat for other Front.
BO rem sts at Back neck.

Finishing
With trim yarns (if desired), work 1 row of single crochet around entire front and neck edges. Chain 1 at the places you wish your buttonholes to be.

Now work reverse single crochet (sometimes called the crab or shrimp st) around entire edge. The armhole edges don't seem to curl, so it is optional whether you wish to crochet around them.

If you don't know how to crochet, pick up sts along the fronts and neck edges and knit 2 rows, then mark spots for buttons and work a yo and k2tog at those places. Knit one more row and BO loosely.

Weave in ends. Sew on buttons.
