20 sts = 4" (10 cm) in pattern st or 18 sts = 4" in St st on larger needles

Sizes 6 and 7 US (4.5 and 5mm) needles or size needed to obtain gauge

100% mercerized cotton

Instructions

Flame Chevron Pattern St
Row 1 & all odd rows (WS): purl.
Row 2: k3, *ssk, k5, yo, rep from *, end k 1.
Row 4: k3, *ssk, k4, yo, k1, rep from *, end k2 instead of k1.
Row 6: k3, *ssk, k3, yo, k2, rep from *, end k3 instead of k2.
Row 8: k3, *ssk, k2, yo, k3, rep from *, end k4 instead of k3.
Row 10: k3, *ssk, k1, yo, k4, rep from *, end k5 instead of k4.
Row 12: k3, *ssk, yo, k5, rep from *, end k6 instead of k5.
Row 14: k1, *yo, k5, k2 tog, rep from *, end k3.
Row 16: k2, *yo, k4, k2 tog, k1, rep from *, end k3 instead of k1.
Row 18: k3, *yo, k3, k2 tog, k2, rep from *, end k3 instead of k2.
Row 20: k4, *yo, k2, k2 tog, k3, rep from *.
Row 22: k5, *yo, k1, k2 tog, k4, rep from *, end k3 instead of k4.
Row 24: k6, *yo, k2 tog, k5, rep from *, end k3 instead of k5.

Rep these 24 rows.

Back And Front (both knit the same)
With smaller needles CO 88 (95, 102, 109) sts and knit 6 rows in garter st (knit every row).
Change to larger needles and work in flame chevron until piece measures 12 1/2 (13, 13 1/2, 14)" from beg. Mark each end of last row for start of armholes.
Cont in pattern until piece measures 18 (20, 21, 22)" from beg, end on WS.

Shape Neck
Keeping to pattern, work 33 (36, 39, 42) sts, sl center 22 (23, 24, 25) sts onto a st holder, attach 2nd ball and work last 33 (36, 39, 42) sts. Working separately but at same time, bind off 2 sts at each neck edge twice, then dec one st at same edges every other row once-28 (31, 34, 37) sts each side.
Knit 6 rows in garter st. BO all sts.

Sleeves
With smaller needles CO 67 (74, 81, 88) sts and knit 6 rows in garter st.
Change to larger needles and flame chevron.
Inc one st each side every 4th (4th, 6th, 6th) row 7 (6, 4, 4) times, working inc sts into pattern-81 (86, 89, 96) sts.
Work even until piece measures 6" from beg. BO.

Finishing
Sew left shoulder seam.

Neck edging:
With right side facing and smaller needles, pick up 90 (91, 94, 99) sts along neck edge. Knit 6 rows in garter st. BO.

Sew right shoulder seam. Center sleeves between markers and sew in place. Sew side and sleeve seams.
