Yarn Shop Reviews

The Grafton Yarn Store

Grafton, WI 53024

The Grafton Yarn Store in Grafton, Wisconsin has undergone a complete overhaul under the new ownership of Ann Schantz, and what an overhaul it is!

Located in a historic mill overlooking the Milwaukee River, this quaint shop sandwiched among art studios is a delight to the eyes. With charming displays built among antiques and colorful new yarns arriving daily, this shop is a must see! I've patronized the same store for over 28 years and watched it go from stale to stunning over the past six months. New yarns from all of the top manufacturers now fill the shelves with a refreshing new palette for needle artists. And the prices meet or beat anything I've found on the internet plus I get to touch it in person and get expert help from Ann and her staff.

Sadly disappointed in this one. I love their catalog, but the store lacked any pizzazz and did not have a very good selection of yarns. Stick to the catalog on this one.

The Herrschners retail shop in Stevens Point is under a new manager and is a lot better than it was before. The sales and yarn selection are incredible! And everything they have in the catalog, they have in the store, and if it isn't on the shelves, they'll go into the warehouse to find it. The salespeople are super nice and very helpful.

Thought I would give my two cents!

If you are looking for a great natural fiber shop this IS the place to go. The owner's name is Jodi and she is very nice to talk with. She is also very helpful. She carries alpaca wool, all types of different wools and wool blends, needles, roving, weaving looms and other weaving items. She is also in the process of expanding her shop. Not only does she have a shop, she also has about 50 alpacas. There are tours to be taken and a lot of information about owning your own. 7/07

This is the premier yarn shop in Northeastern Wisconsin and its popularity proves it--there is a steady stream of customers! The Knitting Hutch's selection of fine knitting yarns cannot be beat: Rowan, Classic Elite, Jo Sharp, Tahki, Dale of Norway, Swedish Yarns, much, much more. It is rare that one has to special order because there is always a huge color selection and wide variety of yarns in stock. The Hutch also features monthly discounts on select yarns and patterns. And no one can compare with the support. Jane and her staff are the finest instructors around. No question or problem ever goes unanswered; there is no problem for which there is not a workable solution.

The Knitting Hutch offers a huge variety of classes, for something that appeals to every knitter. Class costs are very reasonable. Master knitting techniques are offered at comparatively low rates and with plenty of one-on-one instruction. The Knitting Hutch specializes in turning good knitters into master knitters. And then there's that touch of genuine hominess, at classes and always. The shop is so pretty, the coffee and treats wonderful, and Jane is the warmest, most genuine person you could ever meet! What better shop to sponsor the upcoming Fall Knitters' Retreat in beautiful Door County!

This shop is incredible. They have a long table where you can come in and just knit with friends, and they offer many classes and quality yarns. They do not insist you use thier yarns although I have found knitting with nicer yarns has made my knitting quality improve immensely.

Verona, Wisconsin is just outside Madison.

The two proprietors, Mo and Amy (ladies both) have a perfect set-up: A combination knitting and coffee shop! Half the small space has tidy small tables with plenty of chairs; there's a sort of center island counter from which a wide variety of teas and coffees are available, and they have a modest (but yummy) selection of pastries, scones, buns, etc.

They have a fine range of good yarns including the really interesting ones, and they carry Blackberry Ridge yarns from just down the road a piece. They have a small but fine selection of books available and lots and lots of patterns, and a comprehensive supply of straight, circular and DP needles including teeny-tiny and huge - primarily bamboo.

They're open from 630 AM to about 6 PM. In the morning the tables are filled with businessmen on their way to work having their morning cuppa; they tend to clear out by about 830 and the knitters move in. It's the sort of place where friends meet to knit and sip - and I often go all by myself because you're in conversation with new friends immediately. It's a quiet refuge where you can spend as much time as you like - and there's always friendly efficient help with any problems that come up. They're now beginning to offer classes, too.

Here's a synopsis for you: I took my 5-year-old granddaughter there with me. I was knitting, she was learning running stitches with embroidery floss on needlepoint canvas. I thought we'd stay 'til she became restless....maybe a half hour. Well, the visit lasted two hours, and as I was putting away my knitting she went to Amy (the proprietor) and said Thank you, I've had a very nice time! Even a 5-yr-old enjoys her time there.
